At the University of Oxford’s Department of Education, we investigate how young children learn languages. We are currently conducting a Foreign Language Learning study with 7-8-year-olds where children play a fun little online game at home on a laptop learning some Japanese. With our work, we are hoping to better understand how children learn Foreign Languages and how we can support their learning development.
The game is a ‘Treasure Hunt’ game designed for English-speaking children. During the game, your child will hear some words that s/he already knows (like chocolate, banana) and others that s/he doesn't know recorded by a Japanese speaker. The idea is that s/he will learn the meaning of those Japanese words by trial and error while playing.
Is my child eligible?
We are looking for 7- to 8-year-old children who speak English as their first language.
Is it safe?
The study received full ethical approval by the University of Oxford (Ref No: R73484/RE001). There are no risks associated with taking part.
What equipment is required?
Your child will play a fun language game at home on a laptop. Headphones for your child are required.
How long does it take?
The study consists of two game sessions on two (ideally consecutive) days. Each session takes about 20-30 minutes.
What are the benefits?

Is parental involvement required?
While you are welcome to help your child with the instructions, s/he has to play the game on her/his own - without parental help!
